domain name registrationWeb Site Domain Name Selection and Registration

By Ed Slattery

So you're ready to get started on your first serious web site.  Hopefully, you have already figured what interest, area of expertise or other such subject matter you will be putting on your new web site for content.  Now you are ready for the next critical step to becoming a site owner and developer.  The domain name!

This name or URL will be your internet address.  You can also use it for your email addresses when dealing with things about your site.  Of course, there are some key things to consider when selecting a domain name.

First, do you want a short and easy to enter name or a search engine optimized name hyphenated-something-like-this. com?

Well, the biggest reason to go either of these directions has most to do with where your traffic will come from.  If you are planning on doing any marketing that will require a person to recall your site name and enter it manually, then short and sweet is the key.  However, if your traffic will primarily come from search engines, then capitalizing on an optimized name with your main search term keywords actually in the URL may be the best choice.  Put some thought into this step of your site development.  Although you can always change domains, it can be a great deal of work to accomplish the change and I recommend you try to get this step right the first time.

Second, do you want .com, .net, .biz or any of the other options for your suffix.?

One of the biggest factors to consider when deciding which domain extension to use is that people generally prefer the .com extension to all others.  More often than not, when trying to recall a web site address, an individual will try .com first.  Of course, if you use one of the less common extensions, you have more options since more names are available as .net, .biz, .org and so on.

So in conclusion, it is obvious to see that choosing your web site domain name is a critical step to spend some time on when making your new site.  You want to decide whether you will rely on name recognition or search engine traffic for your site.   Then, find a registrar like the one linked on this page and get started.
